Achievement in Art & Beyond

Student Showcase

Sonoma Valley High School is known for more than just traditional academics — from nurturing/training future visual artists via the renowned Media Arts Program and Photography Program, to fostering budding writers and journalists via the Dragon’s Tale campus newspaper.

A Treasure at SVHS

Media Arts

Under the guidance and leadership of Peter Hansen, the school’s Media Arts department has become a Sonoma institution–producing student films that are screened each year at the Sonoma International Film Festival. In addition, students produce regular live on-campus productions.

In November 2016, the Sonoma Cultural and Fine Arts Commission named Mr. Hansen the Sonoma “Treasure Artist for 2017.” In selecting Hansen, the Commission noted not only his accomplishments as a filmmaker, but also his dedication to the youth of Sonoma Valley.

On 1/25/17, the Sonoma Cultural and Fine Arts Commission hosted an award reception for Mr. Hansen at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Hansen received the Key to the City from Sonoma Mayor Rachel Hundley (see below), as well as recognition from Rebecca Hermosillo (Office of Congressman Mike Thompson), Janelle Wetzstein (Office of Assemblyman Marc Levine and Senator Bill Dodd), Jennifer Gray (Office of First District Supervisor Susan Gorin), and a video tribute from past and current students. Congratulations to Mr. Hansen!
